The Johns Hopkins University CTY Talent Search began in 1979 as an effort to work with top students in grades 2-8 worldwide.

Through this search, students who have scored at the 95th percentile or higher on national grade-level standardized tests (or with comporable scores on state tests) take above grade levle tests to assess their math and verbal/reading talents.

The results for above grade level tests can help families and educators with appropriate educational planning inside and outside school, and may, depending on the particular scores, open doors to a range of CTY's programs and services.  Such services include a Summer Program that students choose and attend a three week summer session at various locations in the East Coast or here in the West Coast.

The CTY Talent Search is the gateway for eligible students to participate in CTY's Summer Programs and CTY Online courses (year-round).  All enrolled students are eligible to attend CTY's Family Academic Programs and receive other CTY benefits.

This year November 14, and 15, 2013, our students will be taking the School and College Ability Test (SCAT) or the SAT.

Our 6th grade students will be taking the School and College Ability Test or SCAT.  The SCAT is an above-level test desgined to measure a student's mathematical and verbal reasoning abilities.

Our 7th and 8th graders will be taking the Scholastics Assessment Test or SAT.  This is the same SAT as taken by college-bound high school students.  Taken early, the test provides families with a clear snapshot of advanced math and reading abilities. However, CTY does not consider the writing section of the SAT.

As a Family, I need you to keep some thigs in mind regarding these tests.

  • These tests are designed for older children and intended to be very challenging.

  • It is also "low stakes" testing-simply a way for families to discover more about a child's academic talents, especially in relation to other bright, same-grade children worldwide.

  • Some students will qualify for CTY's summer and online courses.

  • All students will qualify for Family Academic Program.
